Orthotics for Seniors

For seniors, problems with circulation and other health issues often will first reveal themselves through the feet.

Custom-made orthotics can help alleviate foot pain and provide more comfort and support. Sometimes people adjust to pain over the years. Issues with the muscles and joints in the foot, knees, and other parts of your body, will only get worse if not corrected.

Some signs that you may need orthotics include pain in any part of the foot, such as the arch and heel, shin pain, and even hip pain might also be indicators that you need orthotics.

If the tendon at the back of the heel starts to hurt or feel stiff, if you have sharp pain in your heel or under your arches, or even if you start to develop bunions or ingrown toenails, then you may need custom-fitted orthotics.

Ways to help seniors with foot care and their health:

A Chiropodist is a regulated health care professional that comprises the largest number of foot specialists in Ontario. A consultation would be good to identify any foot concerns. They provide routine foot care (nails and skin), custom orthotic therapy, treatment and surgery for ingrown toenails and various other specific treatments as part of an individualized plan of management for each patient. Seniors can benefit from chiropody care!

Self-care Tips for foot care:

• check your feet or have a family member help if you’re unable to do it on your own on a regular basis.

• Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time. Don’t sit with your legs crossed for too long.

• Good blood circulating to your feet is important, always. When lying down, keep your feet elevated slightly on a pillow. If you’ve been sitting or lying down for a while, try to get up and move. Walking and stretching often is very helpful. Warm foot baths are good for circulation.

• It’s important that your feet have the proper support, are properly aligned and are comfortable; this is where orthotics may help.
