What is a Chiropodist?

Chiropodists have regulated health care professionals that comprise the largest number of foot specialists in Ontario. They are primary health practitioners (a doctor's referral is not required to make an appointment) who are licensed to assess and provide treatment for a variety of medical conditions/services relating to the feet including:

 

Dermatological Problems
  • Fungal nails, ingrown nails, thick and/or discoloured nails

  • Callous, corns, warts, rashes/Athlete's foot

  • Complications due to psoriasis

  • Wounds/ulcers

 

Diabetic Foot Care
  • Assessment/prevention/education

  • Routine foot care

  • Neuropathy

  • Wounds

  • Pressure offloading

 

Neurological and /or Vascular Conditions
  • Neuropathy

  • Morton's Neuroma

  • Varicose veins/swelling

 

Musculoskeletal Problems
  • Heel pain/plantar fasciitis/spurs

  • Bunions/hammertoes

  • Achilles tendon

  • Ankle instability

  • Arthritis

  • Abnormal gait

  • High/low arches

  • Shin splints

  • Foot-related knee, hip or back problems

 

Chiropodists have extensive academic training in health sciences, podiatric medicine and humanities, which is complemented with clinical training at various approved facilities. They provide routine foot care (nails and skin), custom orthotic therapy, treatment and surgery for ingrown nails and various other specific treatments as part of an individualized plan of management for each patient. Chiropody services can benefit people of all ages and backgrounds including children, seniors, athletes and people with diabetes, arthritis and symptoms of overuse. In fact, anyone can benefit from chiropody care!
